Fuel for Healing

Giving your body what it needs can keep you healthy, help you achieve or maintain your target weight, improve your physical and mental performance, and improve your mood. “Giving your body what it needs” can include resting from physical activity, staying hydrated, and eating nutritiously. Unfortunately, performing artists can have a difficult time integrating these healthy behaviors into their daily routine.

Rest and hydration guidelines have been presented previously, so this article focuses on the importance of nutrition on injury prevention and recovery.

Eating nutritious, well-balanced meals and snacks is important because the food you eat is your body’s fuel. This fuel powers your body’s systems (circulatory, nervous, reproductive, etc.) and processes (cell metabolism/energy production, the healing process). Without an appropriate amount or type of fuel, your body will breakdown and be unable to repair itself completely or correctly. This is very similar to the physiological processes involved in the creation of stress fractures.

When physically active people, like performers, do not maintain a proper diet, physical and mental fatigue set in and they are more likely to suffer an injury due to this fatigue. When the body doesn’t have enough nutrition and energy to power the natural recovery processes that take place after physical activity, the muscles, ligaments, and tendons that are stressed during physical activity will not recover appropriately. This leads to tissue failure, which is what medical professionals call injuries. Something that may appear to be a nagging injury will progress to a more serious problem without adequate nutrition and rest.

Not only can eating well-balanced, nutritious meals help you avoid overuse and fatigue-related injuries, but it can also help you feel better when you’re sick or recover from an injury. The healing process needs calcium, copper, pyridoxine (vitamin B6), iron, thiamin (vitamin B1), niacin, and riboflavin (vitamin B2) to function properly and efficiently. Wounds need ascorbic acid (vitamin C), retinol (vitamin A), zinc, protein, essential fatty acids, and calories to heal correctly.

Sources and Relevant Functions of Nutrients Necessary for Healing

The best way to meet your body’s nutritional needs is to eat balanced, nutritious meals and snacks at regular intervals on a daily basis.
